Books I have read the first half of the year....

I opened a book today and knew I would like it at once. The first page showed a hand-drawn map of Cinque Terre in Italy. A place you just fall in love with when you visit. We were on a family trip there maybe around 1994 and it was such a great experience that I cannot forget that excursion to Cinque Terre.

The book is Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. It combines Hollywood of the 60s and the romantic Italian coastline of Genoa. I am curious how I will like this book.

This afternoon I tried to work on my tan (cheesy white legs) at the pool and I finished The Witch's Daughter, by Paula Brackston. This is a good entertaining story about a witch who has lived over 300 years and meets and fights her Nemesis in different eras of her life.

Other books I have finished recently:

The Forgotten Garden, Kate Morton - Nell was abondoned on a ship to Australia and searches for her history as an adult.

The Best American Noir of the Century. This is a collection of  'Noir' short stories. I like this genre and I love reading short stories at lunch. This collection is certainly worth it.

The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova, a different kind of hunt for Count Dracula.

The Shoemaker's Wife, Adriana Trigiani. A beautiful love story that brought tears to my eyes.

A couple of classics:

Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald

I enjoyed all of the above. However, I think I need something light and funny now. Something like Garrison Keillor's Pontoon, stories of Lake Wobegon. That made me laugh out loud.
I remember Rita Mae Brown's Bingo featuring the funny Hunsenmeier sisters, yes, something like that.

For now, here are a few books in my queue, on my shelf that I have not read yet:
The Swan Thieves, Elizabeth Kostova,
The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield,
Rooftops of Tehran, Mabod Seraji,
The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood.

Enjoy your summer reads. I would love to hear what you have on your bookshelves or Kindle.
