Poor puppy!

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”
― Josh Billings

This is Cooper.
He is our 9 year old Springer Spaniel Mix. He tore one ligament in his right back knee, his CCL, and was scheduled for surgery on Friday (June 29th). Unfortunately his left leg could not take the pressure of the few days that he had to limp on it and on one day before the surgery, that left CCL tore as well. He was immobile and we where shocked. We talked to two vets, and both, including our own vet, suggested that we have surgery done on both knees on Friday.
"Bilateral stifle exploration and TPLO" (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy).
He made it through the surgery without complications and was kept overnight at the clinic. On Saturday afternoon he was brought home and slept through to Sunday night. He is on several medications:
Antibiotics (Cephalexin), Pain Meds (Tramadol and Meloxicam), Antbacterial (Baytril) and a sedative (Acepromazine).

On Monday, Day 3, Cooper got up from his bed and starting to hobble towards the kitchen. We caught him fast by placing a towel under his belly like a sling to support him and prevent him from putting weight on his hind legs. He urinated and then we led him back to his bed.
This scared us, because we were afraid that he had used his hind legs and put too much pressure on them. Later in the day, I found a bit of poop on the towel. So all seems to be working well.

On Day 4 I noticed that the bandages covering his incisions were spotty. I called the vet and he wanted to have a look. They removed the bandage and noticed that one suture on one side had come loose, so they had to restitch that side and they kept Cooper there for a few hours.
When I picked him up again, he was still drowsy from the sedation. The technicians carried him to the car and at home a neighbor came to help me carry him back inside.

Today is Day 5 after surgery. Cooper has been sleeping most of the day. He has not gone to the bathroom yet, but the vet said I could take him outside with a sling. I am letting him sleep until he tells me that he has to go by getting restless and trying to stand up. It has been a very quiet Fourth of July for now. Knock on Wood.

My plan for today: Do nothing, watch "Despicable Me", eat some leftover chicken and read my book on Kindle "Winter Sea" by Susanna Kearsley.
