River Inn - Big Sur

River Inn
River Inn, Big Sur

We did not have fixed plans, but a few goals in mind. One of them was to stop for lunch at the Big Sur River Inn. If I am driving south on Highway 1, I just have to stop there either to have breakfast, or lunch or a drink during one of their Jazz-Brunches. It is so worth it. And on this trip we had all the time in the world.
The River Inn is located approx 25 miles south of the Monterey Peninsula in Big Sur. You can't miss the colorful bus/coffee shop on the right.

It 's been there since the 30s and photographs in the lobby and the bar depict its long history. We have not stayed at the Inn overnight, just stopped there many times while driving south, but it would be a great weekend getaway.

As the weather was perfect that day, we sat on the outside patio and enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Ceasars Salad and spicy clam chowder soup and a big BLT was our choice, a good one. (See me staring? I could not get

Lunch on the patio

enough of the beautiful view I had of rolling green hills and that huge tree right next to our table, giving us enough shade and a little bit of sun.)
After lunch we just had to go down the lawn area to the river.

In luck, we found two empty chairs and sat in the river for probably two hours, just enjoying nature, the sun rays breaking through branches and the cool water running over our toes. (I had a manicure a few days before that's why I seem to be showing off my toes all the time)

We waved to a group who were happily floating downstream in tubes, having a grand time. They ended their journey at the River Inn but told us that they could have continued on to the ocean, it was just too cold that day. They had started their adventure a few miles north at the Fernwood Camping Grounds. That sounds like so much fun to do in the summer. It was such a wonderful afternoon. But the day was not over and we continued our journey further south. To be continued.......
