Chug Puppy Sweater
Imagine a fingerless glove with two thumbs.
This will be a fun project to knit, I thought to myself looking at our puppy and started casting on with my sock yarn.
Several variations later it turned out to be my favorite knitting project.
Size: XS – fits dogs weighing 2.5 – 5 pounds (featuring Chihuahua/Pug puppy - Gino)
Puppy Measurements for XS as seen on model (approx):
Neck – 8 inches (20 cm)
Chest – 10 inches (25 cm)
Back – 10 inches (25 cm)
Any sock yarn will work.
Featured yarn: Opal Hundertwasser by Zwerger Garn (75% Superwash Wool, 25% Polyamide (nylon))
1 set of 5 doublepointed needles US 11/2 (2.5mm) Abbreviations:
1 circular needle US 11/2 (2.5mm) any length k=knit
1 crochet hook (2.5 mm or 3mm) p=purl
Stitchholder or wasteyarn yo=yarnover
Tapestry needle dpn=double pointed needles
30 sts/42 rows = 4” (10x10cm)
Cast on 48 stitches.
using the dpn place 12 stitches on each needle and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.
The needles will be numbered Needle 1, Needle 2, etc.
Round 1: K1, P1 – repeat for 10 rounds (= 0.8 inch/2 cm)
Continue in the round in basic stockinette pattern. Needles 1, 2 and 3 will be the back of the sweater. Needle 4 will be the chest part.
Row 11: Knit 36 st (Needle 1, 2 and 3) – Needle 4 – k2, yo, k8, yo, k2 –
Row 12: knit 36 st –– k2, yo, k10, , k2 –
Row 13: knit 36 st –– k2, yo, k12, yo, k2 –
Row 14: knit 36 st –– k2, yo, k14, yo, k2 –(with each YO you are increasing 2 stitches to Needle 4 – repeat 3 more times until Needle 4 holds 26 stitches. (= total of 62 stitches on all 4 needles and approx. length of piece = 2.3 inches /6cm).
Distribute stitches on 3 needles as follows:
Needle 1 –12 + 3 last stitches from Needle 4
Needle 2 –12,
Needle 3 –12 + 3 first stitches from Needle 4
Put remaining 20 stitches from Needle 4 on stitch holder
Knit stockinette back and forth on Needles 1, 2 and 3 for 2 inches/5cm. Leave stitches on needles, break yarn.
Pick up the 20 stitches on the stitch holder with one dpn and knit as follows:
Bind off first 5 stitches, knit 15 stitches to the end of the row, turn and bind off first 5 stitches, purl to end of row
Knit the remaining 10 stitches back and forth for 2 inches/5cm
Now knit to end of row, with backward loop method cast on 5 stitches, pick up Needles 1-3 and knit to end of row of Needle 3 and cast on 5 stitches (backward loop cast-on). Back to 20 stitches on Needle 4 and 62 total stitches
Continue body in the round in basic stockinette pattern. Needles 1, 2 and 3 are still back of sweater. Needle 4 is the chest part.
After 5.5inches/14cm from collar bind off middle 6 stitches on Needle 4. You can now change to a circular needle.
Knit remaining total stitches back and forth in basic stockinette stitch. Bind off 2 stitches at beginning of each row 5 times until you have 36 stitches left.
Bind off 1 stitch at beginning of each row 10 times = 16 stitches left.
Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of each row 2 times = 4 stitches left.
Bind off 4 stitches.
With dpn cast on 32 stitches around leg opening and knit in rib pattern (k1, p1) for 5 rows each leg.
With crochet hook crochet a border around the body opening with 1 row of backward single crochet.
